The agenda is that I have just installed a fresh copy of XP on an
ancient Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop and need to at least get the
Ethernet controller running.

The Dell download site is useless.

"Server unavailable, please try again later".

Does anybody know of an alternate source?

Per Bruce Hagen:
Dell Driver & Downloads
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriversHome/NeedProductSelection

Can you access that? No problem here.

Access? No problem.

Build list of downloads? No problem.

Download and install Dell's Download Manager? No problem.

Actually download? No way Jose'. "Server unavailable, please
try again later".

But I found the workaround.

Finally dawned on me that Dell uses various other maker's
components and the Ethernet part was a BroadComm 4401.

Went to the BroadComm site and... Bingo!....

Now I've got the Ethernet part working, I think I'll just kick
back and wait for some problem or another to surface vis-a-vis
other drivers.

I never repeat never use the Dell online 'download manager'... it is
easier to download one file at a time, and nearly as fast. Why would
you use the manager just to get one driver??
