Wondering if anyone here can point me to something that can do as
described below.

I want to have a desktop that is way bigger than my actual monitor
where I can pan around on it by bumping the edges with mouse, to see
the whole thing.

This is something I've done for yrs on linux desktops but now using
windows more for some things and sorely missing that capability

This is not to be confused with Virtual desktops like available with
`goscreen' or `altdesk' (possibly others?). Although there may be
applications that do both.

I do want the virtual desktops too but I have that with goscreen or
altdesk currently. I want to have each desktop in a large
resolution. Larger than my actual monitor.

The virtual desktop is a set of desktops all the size of the monitor.

I guess what I'm after could be called virtual resolution. Where I'm
provided with something like 2060x1600 resolution on a 17 in monitor.

So to see all of that huge desktop I need to pan around as described.

You may wonder why... but its just a personal taste developed over yrs
of using linux that way. It has a side benefit of keeping people off
my computer too since until you are will used to it, it can be very
confusing when the desktop slithers around with you.

If I remember correctly, ATI video cards offer an extended desktop
feature that allows you to use a low screen resolution and then use
your mouse to extend the screen to the parts of the screen that are
hidden. You activate it in its control panel or by using a key
combination. Enter extended desktop in Google to find out what the
situation is.

Far as I know... and google search confirms `extended desktop' refers
to using 2 (or more) monitors. Even limiting the search futher with

ati extended desktop

Still it appears to be about using more than 1 monitor, not about
increasing the resolution of a single monitor beyond the hardware
scope.

No. One monitor only. Years ago, a Toshiba laptop had panning.sys
to let you scroll your screen horizontally and vertically at
reduced resolution - a crude screen magnifier.
