John Barnett MVP

Apologies for posting this post here. It has laready been posted in the
Outlook Newsgroup but no replies have been recieved so far. Perhaps a wider
audience might be able to throw some light onto the problem?

I recently had someone email me asking for help. Apparently he has been
trying to sync his outlook contacts from his Laptop to his PDA (and
visa-versa, of course). Up until 2 weeks ago he has had no problems. Now
however, every time he tries to sync the two machines the files do not
transfer. I have suggested he checks his connection cable and if that is ok
he does a repair of outlook. These tasks he has completed and, he informs
me, they have made no difference. I have included a copy of athe first and
last email from him so you can get a better idea of what is actually
happenning.

"John,
Picked your name off of the M/S MVP list. Hope you can help. All of a sudden
when I sync my PDA with my laptop, the data (contact) information does not
transfer. I do not want to reinstall M/S Office. is there any easy way to
get my PDA to sync with my laptop rather than Palm Desktop."

"John

Did the detect/repair; no success. Re: details, I work off of a WinBook
laptop. Have over 70 GB of disk space available. CPU is 1600 GhZ. Connecting
my Palm Tungsten E to my laptop via USB cable.

Again, the strange thing is that I had no issues with syncing until 2 weeks
ago. What I know is that the syncing process is going to my Palm desktop
application not M/S Outlook. I tried deleting the Palm Desktop application,
with still no success thinking that might work."

Can anyone give me any suggestions as to (a) what he is doing wrong and (b)
how to correct the problem?

John

Are there any errors in Event Viewer relating to the problem?

Hope this helps.

Hi Gerry,

I have requested that he check the event viewer for any error messages but
have not yet received any confirmation. I will let you know as soon as i get
any further information.

Gerry this is the information he has supplied me with to date:

On 2/12:

A provider, Offprov has been registered in the WMI \Root\MSAPPS, to use
Local System Account. Account is privileged and provider may cause a
security violation if it does not correctly impersonate user requests.

On 2/8:

Product: Palm Desktop- A newer version of Palm Desktop is already installed.

On 2/3 (3 times):

Hanging Application, VERSION 0.0.0.0. hang module hang application version.

On 1/12:

Detection of product (with along number) feature 'Office User Data component
(again with a long number) failed. The resource 'HKEY_CURRENT_ USER
Xsoftware\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\User Data does to exist

On 12/30:

Detection of product (again with a long number) Feature Outlook MAPICONTAR
failed during request for component.

Also reference other feature: Outlook MAPIIMEP, MAPIPST, MAPI that all
failed.

Hope it makes sense.

Gerry i am awaiting the information. I had requested scren shots of the
actual event windows but didn't get them. At least the screen shot would
have supplied the relevant information.

Here my standard on Event Viewer.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event
ID, Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make
sure this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Links giving some information about specific Error Reports are:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/support/ee.asp

http://www.eventid.net/search.asp

These links, however, do not contain information about each and every
Error Report.

In Event Viewer there is no facility to print Error Reports. A
workaround is copy and
paste the Error Report into an email, send it to yourself and print off
the copy in your
Inbox or your Sent Items folder.
