OT: Online merchants, specifically NewEgg & ZipZoomFly

Mostly trivia.

I guess ZipZoomFly has replaced second day air with standard ground
or some other lesser delivery service. Unfortunately their web site
hasn't been looking very good lately either IMO.

Any other online merchant besides Mwave looking good lately?

On at least some products, NewEgg is offering a one-year
subscription with "no obligation to continue". If you accept, that
might mean NewEgg will give your credit card information to Ziff
Davis Media and after the year is up, Ziff Davis Media will
automatically charge you a full subscription price if you do not
actively try to cancel the subscription. I didn't see any other
explanation.

Others might have other interpretations. Everyone might have a
different interpretation. The text is below.

To their credit IMO, at least for now the checkbox is cleared by
default.

"Included with your purchase is a 1-year subscription to PC Magazine
(or Electronic Gaming Monthly) -- a $9.97 value. You will receive 1
year of PC Magazine with no obligation to continue. If you do not
agree to receive this offer, you have the option to request a refund
of the subscription value. Accepting this offer will not affect the
price you pay at checkout. Limit 1 subscription per household."

[Check box]

"I agree to receive this offer and to have Newegg.com provide my
information to Ziff Davis Media."

The impression I got is you were charged for the
subscription whether you wanted it or not. They had a
rebate form you could send in and get the $10 back if you
wanted to give Ziff Davis all your information on the rebate
form. I thought it stunk. Talk about a rip off.

After the "special" ended, the price dropped $10.

That's normally how those deals work, I was stung that way by Ticketbastard,
when the free subscription runs out the magazine bills the credit card you
used with Ticketmaster and hopes you won't notice. I noticed.

I had trouble with NewEgg last year, ordered a video card that was DOA and
they were some kind of snotty about taking it back and refunding my
shipping, I had to be quite insistent to get the return shipping refunded,
it was enough to prevent me from ordering from them again.
