Dude

anyone ever tried this configuration / this is for a friend of mine

one pc is getting main supply of internet throught ethernet

she has an older laptop that has usb ports, but no ethernet

I suggest to her

install extra ethernet card, and then use ics
both machines have xp

im thinking I can make her a ethernet to usb crossover
and put the laptop on her network.

what you think.

i see cables for sale that are supposed to do this
anyone ever tried it?

we did put the laptop on the internet
just to verify the usb ports...

thank you

Avoid ICS.

Get a wireless router and a PC-Card ethernet card for the laptop. Connect the
internet feed to the router, wire the router to the PC, and set up the wireless
connection to the laptop.

I like your idea, im just a tight ass

I've personally used ICS for many years, and it works like a charm

the biggest thing that messes up networks is software
third party software

i have an old ethernet card layin around here
i figure I can just build a ethernet to usb crossover

i've never paid for crossover cables...it's too easy to makem (like 10
mins and you're done)

you must not like ics, but i've had nice experience

I like routers too, i don't have one anymore, but, I used one for a
long time too..
was a netgear 5 port hub

But aren't there major differences between USB and Ethernet technologies? I
cannot imagine it would be as simple as crossing over some wires and hooking
it up, otherwise nobody would bother buying NIC's. I would think that the
minimum you would need to do would be to buy a usb/ethernet adaptor

and then make a crossover cable.

Both USB and PCMCIA ethernat cards are pretty cheap nowadays. I'd go with
one of them and a crossover cable.

yes, that's true, if I go with this, then i can just put a crossover
cable between the two

but far as usb to ethernet, i do see lots of $20 and under adapters..

my first on only experience with usb for internet, it was just lousy

soon as i switched to ethernet, it was like night and day
