ot: Hosts file Malware only?

T

Tim Clark

I'm thinking about using a hosts file

Does anyone know of one which Just lists MALWARE sites.
[e.g. virus, trojans, exploits, flyby downloads, and the like]
I am NOT interested in blocking COOKIES or ADS.
Firefox takes care of them just fine.

I wish the MVPs host people would make one which JUST blocks MALWARE sites
so that it would not be so large. I would rather NOT disable the DNS Client
on my machine.

Any ideas?

Hi Tim:

I was using the long list provided by Spybot and I came to the conclusion it
was worthless. I now use the Hosts file with several sites to block out some
ads while using Y! websites. What's wrong with using McAfee SiteAdvisor?
Nothing is perfect, but it does provide some useful information.

Greetings Mr Cat,

"What's wrong with using McAfee SiteAdvisor? "
Did "I" say there was anything wrong with McAfee SiteAdvisor?
I use it :)
I also use WOT [Web Of Trust] though I'm not as trusting of it :p

The problem is that I would prefer sites be blocked before I even get to them.
I would like them to be blocked before I even try to get to them or a
website even tries to load or redirect to them.
I would like them to not even be available thru the host file.

I just don't want or need to have "annoyances" blocked [e.g. cookies or ads]
as I have adequate defenses for these in place.

I appreciate the issue. It would be nice if a definitive list of sites were
available; however, the number of nasty sites is changing so frequently, it
would be a Herculean effort.

Mr Cat,

I think you are missing my point.
Host files, like MVP Already do it !!!
But they contain a bunch of other stuff that I do not need.

I looking for something like MVP that doesn't bother with cookies or ads.
