OT: Ghost 10 Not Making Incremental Backups

A

Anthony Bollinger

Sorry to post this here, but (1) norton doesn't have newsgroup support, (2)
I notice there have been a few ghost posts in this forum, (3) knowledgeable
people are here. So, here is my question.

I want Ghost to use incremental backups instead of a complete backup
every time I run it, but the file sizes are just getting larger than
the original restore point. I do initiate the backups manually, but I
don't expect this could (or should) have any impact on whether or not
Ghost is able to take the original backup and add incremental changes.
I did uncheck to limit the number of recovery points so that I could
have unlimited. From what I can tell, the system should create an
endless stream of backups until I have it create a new full backup, but it
is creating a full backup every time. How do I correct that?

Any input appreciated,
Tony

Tony,

I don't know if this will help, but since nobody else answered I'll give it
a try.

I use Ghost 10 too. I have it set to create a full new backup every month.
And delete the previous one at that time. And I have it set to automatically
make an incremental backup every morning at 3:00 AM. My backups are saved to
a second hard drive.

My primary hard drive has about 10 Gig's of data on it. That includes all
programs and saved data. My full backup is about 7 Gig's. And the daily
incremental backup's are between .2 Gig. and 1.0 Gig.

Are you saving your backups to the primary partition on your hard drive? If
so, each backup is saving all previous backups. And you should store backups
on another partition or on another hard drive.

Your full backup should have a ".v2i" extension. And your incremental
backups should have a ".iv2i extension. You might want to check and see if
that's so.

The easiest way to create your backups is to use Ghost's Wizard. If you do,
you can always go back in and change any parameter.

Does that help any?

Thanks for the reply! I am saving to an external USB drive (H).and my
backups all have the extension .v2i, so I guess somehow I am not getting
what I want. I will ready your email some more and try to figure out why you
are having success and I am not. Will check back in soon.

Thanks,
Tony

As you go thru the steps, you're not telling it to make incremental
backups; that's a setting you have to make.

I have some documents on how to do things like that if you'd like to have
them. They're too large for posting here though so you'd have to give me a
throw-away account or something to send them to.
For the next 48 hours, the e-mail address:
trap(AT)twaynesdomain(DOT)com
will accept mails with the word "newsgroup" in the Subject line if you would
like to contact me.
Do not keep that address in your address book; as the name implies, it's
a spam trap.

Tony,

It sounds like you now understand your problem.

As Poprivet says, you can make an "Independent Backup
Image", or you can make a "Backup Image Set", but you cannot make an
"Independent Backup" and then later make "Incremental Backups" to go along
with it. That's because the full backup and it's incremental's must be
related to one another for reconstruction. The easiest way is to use the
Ghost Backup Wizard. And once you've made a Backup Image Set, you can go back
and change settings within it, if you need to.

Also, be aware that if you're making the backups to an external USB drive,
you may need to install that external drives drivers and possibly your USB
drivers at the time you use the backup image to recover your computer.

The Ghost manual was hard for me to understand, but it explains everything
pretty well. The same goes for the "Help" on the Ghost window. (That's about
par for Symantec.)

Thanks so much for the feedback. Much as I always appreciate the non-wizard
approach and like to do things manually, I am going to try the wizard and
see if it results are better, now that I hear others are having success. If
that doesn't work, I will get back in touch. --Tony

Thanks, Milt, I'll give the whole thing one more go before giving up on
trying to figure it out myself. --Tony
