i doubt if i will buy doo doo III. Those ilk have been caught up to and
surpassed many times over. Their time is over. borrrrreeeee ingggg.

They took to long to produce in a fast paced game world that has to evolve
to keep gamers interested. Except of course the Command & Conquer series,
which seems to be an everlasting gob stopping main stream game engine
separate from the "first person shooter" game engines and unreal2 gaming
engine modder's. The Command and Conquer engine, now is going to be used for
the next LOTR game, so that begins.........

Stevie Case will be looking for another boyfriend once Karnack there
releases another bouncy jump jump shoot bouncy shoot frag frag bouncy splat
engine - gawd.

see ?? no reference to Nvidea or ATI. I for once really enjoy my ATI
9800pro everytime I boot up a game that has the Nvidia Logo and I smoke the
socks off the frame rate and the directx shader effects look so much more
awesome than anything Nvidia could produce.
http://www.smokeypoint.com/My_PC.htm
Bottom line ?? the really good - great - to die for games - don't advertise
all that much. word of mouth is sufficient.

Maybe that advertisement was just to let you know "they" were still alive,
and no there is no product yet - kind a like milking the cash cow.
vaperWARE!!!

any thing really worth doin last at least two minutes huh - what'd Thresh
win the Ferrari in ? 1.25 minutes ? gawd frag me.

makes about as much sense as what you wrote (spammed) to this ATI NG -
except I tout the ATI big time.

(Can I say straight away that this is not an ATI v Nvidia rant. It's a rail
against game developers and hardware manufacturers getting in bed with each
other to manipulate the game playing public).

Is it just me, or have these guys really sold out now. The video seems to
revolve around some guy in a ponytail and a blazer spouting the most rubbish
I've heard in a long time. He starts off waxing lyrical about Carmack seeing
"Bends in the curve ahead" that other developers cannot. He goes on to say
that Doom III will not just be a boost for Doom III engined games, but for
"The whole gaming industry." Uhuh.

Most annoying is the sickening Nvidia endorsement. "All the guys have 5900
cards, or about to put them in their machines..." Now I own both ATI and
Nvidia cards, and I'm really not interested in saying one is better than the
other. By all means flash up an Nvidia or ATI logo, but to stand there with
the washing powder in his hands saying they never wash with anything else is
just going too far IMHO.

But it makes me gag when they are so blatantly taking the Nvidia dollar and
selling out their arses as a result.

To cap it all, the actual game video is restricted to about three or four
scenes played over and over again while Mr 35 year old ponytail tries to
sell us hardware. I cannot help concluding that the launch of both this game
and Half Life 2 has been deliberately delayed to sucker more people into
upgrading their hardware ahead of the release. I'll bet a dollar to a
doughnut that both of these games will run perfectly well (and prettily)
with lower spec cards. It wouldn't make any commercial sense whatsoever for
them not to.

That's life I suppose, but when you think back to the days of Castle
Wolfenstein and Doom, they really seemed to be gifted punters having a great
time.

I suppose it had to get sneaky sometime.

They really did have the right stuff back then.

They made shareware a household name.

Doom was "the" multiplayer first too.

How about the new "Thief -Deadly Shadows" they not only
went all out with the Nvidia promotion but are also pushing the
24bit SoundBlaster HD. The game runs fine on my ASUS
A7N8X-E Dlx with the SoundStorm chip and my R9700Pro
with the Omega Cat 4.4b drivers.

I agree. I also think that nVidia should abandon it's "The Way It's Meant
To Be Played" program, and ATI should disband it's "Get In The Game"
program too. Neither of these companies are doing the industry any good
by trying to manipulate developers and/or publishers. So far all of the
newer games have run fine on my choice of GPU, and it better stay that
way. I think the fact that alienating one camp or the other would
translate into a lot of lost sales, which is what I think ensures that
games remain highly compatible with both ATI and nVidia hardware.

Its the very reason Microsoft came out with DirectX

True. Doom is supposed to run on Xbox.
Does anyone know how exactly is Xbox performance comparing to Ait/Nvidia
cards?

iD has been pretty close to vest with details concerning Doom3. I've
seen a few comments in the last year that get me to thinking that John
Carmack has made a number of changes to the engine along the way.
Performance gains in hardware should be reflected in the software,
right? I think developers work along these lines too. iD doesn't have
to worry about a publishing house holding them to deadlines (do it NOW
or we'll take it away from you!!! eg Eidos-Core with AoD). iD is
already wealthy enough they shouldn't have to worry about outside
pressures to be competitive with their product. They can simply do what
they want to. As with Quake, that will work to our advantage,
eventually :)

Most of us reading and actively posting in this ng and a.c.p.v.nvidia
(yes, I removed crossposting) know a lot more about both the hardware
and the games than the general public ever will. ATi and nVidia know
they already have us. The advertising is for the general public I'd
say. In that, we are grossly outnumbered. The manufacturers simply
want to reach anyone that isn't already using their products.
Now, if say AMD and Intel were to start embedding little adverts in
their BIOS so we see a splash of theirs every single time we boot up, it
would be the same thing to us. And we'd also be looking for some kind
of patch to get it off of there too :)
I don't like seeing those 'captive audience' adverts either. So perhaps
we can just figure out a way to just not use it?

Not very good. XBox Doom3 will have to be dumbed down graphics wise
just to play it.

The first time I saw the nvidia intro on ut2004/2003 - i'd agree with
you - but after awhile i just yawn and hit escape. Then I remember
reading several articles in boot magazine a few years back when ati
wasnt on top and nvidia was king. Those intro's are the result of good
competition.

Yes, I have no problems with showing a logo. It was when the guy in the
video started banging on about how all his staff have fitted Brand X cards
in their machines that I got a bit fed up with it all. For me it was just a
promo too far...

Slightly off topic but how is the game compared to the first two? I
know they changed companies but hopefully the new company did not "fix"
the game.

It's the same reason you see a "Coke" can in a movie, or a product shot.

If they throw enough money at them, they will succumb.

I've only started the 3rd mission, but if you play in the default 1st
person mode, it feels much the same. Of course with much more
realistic graphics. Haven't run into any water yet, or acquired the
climbing gloves so I don't know how that will work out. The new
lockpicking is an improvement.

The first problem is the install, as of right now the game only works
with Cat 4.4. I tried 4.5 and almost went nuts fixing the damage. It
also has wicked copy protection, it won't let me use Virtual CD or a
backup copy of the CD.(SecuROM 5.03.04.0034 [and a physical
key in the disk, I think])

All in all, it's not the disaster I feared, and is a lot of fun.

I find it annoying. We have already bought the game, why should we be have
to endure any kind of hard sell.
What next after each level a coffee add plays?, or banners appearing across
the bottom of the screen selling insurance. The game would have to be free,
or at a very low cost before I would accept advertising as part of the game.
I also hate it when you install and run a game and a commercial for another
game plays out before the game you paid for starts. It's just rude. If they
installed a link, most people would look at it at thier leisure.

I guess now I will have to go pick it up. I really liked the first two
from Looking Glass and was apprehensive that ION Storm would try to redo
it in the image of Deus Ex or something else. I really like Deus Ex but
it isn't the same as Thief and I want them to stay that way.
Thanks for the update.

I have Thief Deadly Shadows running fine on my system using the 4.5's
(Omega Drivers). What `damage' do you refer to? Did it refuse to
install or something? Just curious.

As for the CD protection issue, easily fixed. :) Just go to
www.gamecopyworld.com and download the no-cd patch. Works just fine
that way. No more popping CD's in/out.

After I installed the 4.5 Omega the 2D was fine but I
couldn't get my software to find any 3D accelerated device.
This is with my R9700Pro. All normal efforts to get it working
failed and the only thing that brought it back was a restore to
before I tried the 4.5's.

Reinstalls of earlier Omega Drivers failed to correct the problem,
including the 4.4b's I'm using now.
