OT converting a DVD for the web

are you sure that's legal? - is this a commercially available dvd (movies/tv
shows) or footage filmed on DV camera and saved/burned to dvd?

I think dvd's are mpeg4 or something so I'd suggest bringing it down to something
like the media player format or quicktime. Depends how long the thing is (i.e. a
two hour movie or a 5 minute clip?).

Hi Andrew,

It's legal..the DVD is the owner's..it isn't a movie really..it's an
interview type thing. I am not sure of the length yet..and actually haven't
even seen it. I'm guessing it is relatively short..but not really sure.This
is something that I have never done before..and really don't understand the
pros and cons of all the different methods.

I did something similar not to long ago for a dive company here on Maui.

We took their commercial that runs on a visitors channel and converted it to web format. We created 2 formats Quicktime and .asf and we then created 3 file sizes based on the user connection

It really depends on how far you want to go with video and if your setup to capture video

If video is an area you will be working with occasionally, the Pinnacle tools are are nice mid range products. You can go with the software alone (Studio 9)

For the High End Professional, Adobe Premier is one of the best out there, but for me it is Over Kill, if I have a client that needs video production (Professional Quality), I just refer them to a Vidographer

Either way you go, the biggest issue will be the capturing of the video, once you get it converted to .avi, .mpeg, etc.. Editing and converting it to web format .wmv, .asf is fairly simple.

Many PCs now come with video editing software. Sony VIAO for example. The key is to get the large video file down to a size that will feed over the net. I use Premiere, but as JDR said, that is a lot to pay, and learn for the results. You will have to have hard disk space to hold the video when it is captured and a software package that will "export" in a variety of formats. Offering different size files is useful for different connections. OK, sorry I can't provide any more input.....not sure how you'd do it but I'm
sure there must be applications somewhere that would do a conversion....

I mean the technology exists to capture video from VHS to computer for editing in
apps like Adobe Premiere and so on....maybe premiere itself might do this
now....you'd need a pretty fast pc I expect to capture clips....
