Hi, can someone reccommend / advise what were the better AGP cards to fit an
ancient motherboard - Asus A7V8x-x

i.e. something a bit better than NVidia 6200 256mb gpu (350mhz gpu), ...that
will still fit this board, without having to upgrade the psu !

i.e. ..it's taking me ages to pin down what AGP cards do not supercede this
old board ! ...that has 2x512mb Geil ddr400 / /SktA,462 - xp2600 Barton
(166mhz/ddr333 fsb !) ...on it !
...XP Home

....did they go up to Nvidia 7200 ...7600 ?

TIA

regards, Richard

If you're prepared to consider ATI, there are HD3850 cards available in AGP
8X. As far as I know, these are the most powerful AGP cards available at
this time, at least at www.newegg.com.

They require 6 or 8 pin PCI-E power connectors, but come with adapters that
provide that from two 4 pin Molex (IDE drive) connectors. Whether your PSU
is up to it, I can't guess. (450W is recommended.)

The HD3650 is also available. It uses a mini 4 pin power connector (looks
like the one intended for floppy drives). It is considerably less powerful
than the 3850, though: 120 "stream processors" rather than 320.

The most recent nVidia AGP card that I recall was the 7900GS. (It used a 4
pin Molex power connector.) It is not made any more, as far as I know.

AGP is now limited. Most higher end video cards are now using the PCI-
Express. However, I did find a last AGP card:

BFG NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT 512MB AGP

Availability: ??????

Try looking in the Asus forum for your board.

7600gt will work probably find older cards on ebay.
wouldn't pay more than 25 dollars plus shipping.

I'm currently using a 7600gt (AGP) with a mobile processor O/C'd to 2.08G if
that's any help the other system specs are similar. The newer drivers helped
increase the speed of the card enough to run Crysis well at close to minimum
settings.
