.ost file extensions

What is contained in .ost file extensions, is there email there? I am trying
to figure out what this extension means and what is contained in it.
 
..ost files are for offline folders. For example, if you are running Outlook
in cached-Exchange mode, these are the files containing the locally cached
copy of your Exchange mailbox folders. If they are removed then the mail
will not be accessible while working offline. Once going back online they
will be recreated (which obviously takes time to sync the folders back up).
