OS Support for Framework 2.0

Bradley

We're trying to decide between the .NET 1.1 and 2.0 frameworks for our
productd. The 2.0 framework's requirements from the MSDN site indicate XP
SP2. Many of our customers won't have XP SP2. I have successfully
installed the 2.0 framework on XP with no service packs. If I'm required to
use XP SP2 with .Net 2.0, can anyone tell me the prevalence of SP2 versus
other XP versions in the market?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The download page for the redistributable lists the following OS's as
supported...

"Windows 2000 Service Pack 3; Windows 98; Windows 98 Second Edition; Windows
ME; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP Service Pack 2"

That doesn't really answer the underlying question, is XP sp2 actually
*required* or a /marketing requirement/.

I'd guess the latter, but too bad, we may never know, thanks to MS being
a monolithic opaque corporation.

They don't state 2000 SP4, they only state 2000 SP3. But I assume that they
mean SP3 and up. Since they don't explicitly mention each OS and all
supported service packs they should specify each OS as they did for 2000 -
only specify the minimum. However, even though they aren't explicit I assume
that XP at the core (XP, XP SP1, XP SP2) is supported since it is the latest
OS. I guess the only way to know for sure then is to put a call into product
support and be specific.

For the XP product line, they specify "Windows XP Service Pack 2". OP
question was are non-sp2 XP installations supported? According to the
MS link you provided, no; according to the OP, yes (empirically).

I doubt that MS PS would give any answer other than what is stated on
that link you provided.

My complaint is that the sp2 'requirement' is probably more of a
marketing 'requirement' than an actual requirement, which is unfortunate
for use stooge users of MS products that are attempting to deploy a .Net
application.

uh?
I recently bought a new computer and put an old, never used, XP home edition
SP1 on it.
The VS.NET2005 beta2 refused to install untill I applied all updates..

We are talking about .Net 2.0, /not/ VS05. Presumably both have
completely different installation requirements.

They also specify "Windows 2000 Service Pack 3". So if we take that
literally then I guess my "Windows 2000 Service Pack 4" isn't supported
since it hasn't been explicitly referenced in the official list. I still say
if this causes you to lose sleep then call product support and ask the
question.
