Hello, all. I have several computers that I have built
over the last few months. All of them have either
Windows XP Home or Pro. I want to uninstall Home on one
of the computers and replace it with Professional, then
install the Home version on another system I am building
right now. I have already activated the OS on the
computer that currently has Home on it. How will I be
able to activate the removed Home edition on the new
computer? I won't have either system on more than one
computer, and that certainly falls within the rules of
activation. I just want to exchange systems. Any help
will be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi John,

Prefectly legal, and easy to do. If it doesn't activate autoimatically (and
if the old activation is more than 120 days old, it probably will), then
simply call the activation number on the screen and tell them what you did.
As long as this is a retail version of WinXP, this is allowed and you will
get a new activation code.

Thanks for responding. Unfortunately, they are both oem
versions, so I guess I'm stuck, huh? All I want to do is
exchange operating systems. They are both paid for, and
I'm not doing anything devious, just installing one OS on
one computer. This is very frustrating, and I can't even
talk to anyone at Microsoft about it without giving them
more money.

Hi John,

That is a limitation of an oem version. It's one of the reasons they are
cheaper than the retail license. It's essentially "you got what you paid
for", in this case meaning you got the restrictions that you paid for/saved
as well. I understand the frustration, but it is what it is. Sometimes,
things are not always the bargains they appear to be.
