Original Half-Life - No AntiAliasing

P.W.U.

Hello,

I pulled out my old copy of the first Half-Life game tonight and thought I
would have some fun reminiscing with the graphics options turned all the way
up (ie FSAA, AF, etc.).

Unfortunately, I ran into some problems when using OpenGL mode -
antialiasing is not functional at all, no matter what the setting (I tried
them all). Everything else works perfectly, including anisotropic filtering.
AA works in Direct 3D mode, but I would prefer to use Open GL because there
are a few glitches in D3D (no Truform or decals, for one thing).

Anybody know how to fix this? I'm using an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB with
Catalyst 4.10. The game is patched to 1.1.1.0.

Thanks!

If you look wayyyy further up in this NG, you'll see a post from me citing
the same exact issue. I still have not found a fix and am left with NO AA in
Half-Life and CS. However, AA does work in Half-Life and CS if you use the
updated versions through steam.

Hmm, that's interesting. Just how different could the steam versions be, as
far as the rendering engine is concerned? Sounds like it wouldn't be a lot
of trouble to make a patch to fix whatever issue is causing this little
glitch.

IIRC, the nVidia drivers do not have this problem. A couple of months ago I
had an FX5200 and I remember playing with AA enabled. I don't suppose ATI
will be bothering with Half-Life 1 compatibility issues in Catalyst
anymore...

Why don't you just get the Steam version then, no broadband? All you
have to do is create a Steam account and enter in you old HL CD-Key.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I do not believe you get the updated version of
HL (HL-Source) for free. You have to preorder the silver package. Then you
get HL2 when released and CS-Source and HL-Source.

He was referring to getting the latest version of HL from Steam, which
does work with FSAA.

Thank you for clarifying.

Also, though I haven't done much testing to verify this, I suspect the
reason that HL(Steam version, NOT HL-Source) does work with FSAA, is because
Steam adds support for 32bpp color rendering to the HL engine which
historically has seemed to work better with AA.

I have had no issues specific to Half Life at all, runs great.

What I did find with the 4.10s is that the profiles didn't seem to work for
me, I had profiles set up for different levels of AA/AF, but when I used
them it just shut all AA/AF down to zero. I had to delete my profiles before
I could get the eyecandy to work again.

Yes, I first discovered that the profile feature was broken several
revisions of Catalyst ago -- think it was about 4.6. I've never tried it
again since, and it seems (according to you) that it still hasn't been fixed
yet. Wonder if Ati is even aware of this problem?

It's interesting that AA works for you (you are using the non-steam version,
right?), but not for myself and others. Please note, we are referring to
running AA in the OpenGL mode, not the D3D mode.

Since one of the differences between the updated Steam version and the CD
version is newfound support for 32-bit color, have you tried setting your
desktop to 16-bpp before launching HL?
