Running out of ideas, and could not repro the problem. The only options that I can think of is to extract a new copy of Shimgvw.dll (or run SFC /Scannow) and delete this key after backing up (assuming they are JPG files):
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.jpg
