Optimum performance

I'm running XP media center edition 2002 w/service pack 2 and 1 gig memory. I
need direction on how to configure windows for best performance, in other
words lean and mean and properly protected.. any links / guidance will be

Properly configured for what?
What is the purpose of this machine?
What are you specifically trying to 'squeeze' the extra performance out of
this machine for?
