Optiimization / Defrag

Seasons' Greetings to All
I hope someone can help me with my problem.
I have been a long time user of Norton System Works, and frequently use the
programs "Speed Disk" function to defragment and "optimize" my hard drives.
I have the original 80 GB C: drive, and I have had a 250 GB F: drive
installed.
I have no problem defrag & optimizing the C drive, but the F drive will not
optimize, it shows the drive highlighted, shows "Optimizing" ... "Moving Data
: 0% ".
No matter how long I give it, it still will not optimize. This causes
Tremdous slow downs using that drive. I know I can defrag using the Windows
version, but is there ANY way the Windows version will optimize as well ?
Also, when I come to this Help and Support section, when i sign in, and then
eneter my "25or6to4" in the search field, it USED to take me to ALL of my
previous questions histories ... now I get a block that shows as invalid.
Is there anything I can do to pull up my Previous Q&A's? With that being a
problem, I'm afraid if I log off of where this question is now, I won't be
able to get back to it unless I use the "arrow progression" and manually
searching back through all pages.
This really has me puzzled.
Thanks for any help or suggestions anyone can offer.

Hello:

This newsgroup is for questions about Windows XP, but Symantec technical
support can help you with questions about Norton products:
http://www.symantec.com/home_homeoffice/support/selectproduct_ts.jsp

This next part is just my opinion, but it's an opinion that's widely held:

With the exception of Norton Antivirus (and Norton Ghost, if you have
it), there is nothing in Norton SystemWorks that is needed with Windows
XP. Moreover, SystemWorks - like all other Norton-brand software - is a
huge resource hog that slows your computer and is difficult and
sometimes impossible to upgrade or uninstall cleanly.

Disk Defragmenter and Norton Speed Disk both optimise but they work
differently. You should not use both, as one will undo what the other
has done. You will also get problems where one locks the other out
thereby denying access.

Have you tried running Disk CleanUp before running Speed Disk in Safe
Mode.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error,
information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the information from the Event Viewer Error
Report into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after
exiting from Event Viewer.

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties, Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes, what is the Device Error code?

Hope this helps.

I was formerly a Norton fan myself, but have become totally
disenchanted with their products. They have declined greatly in
quality and reliability since Symantec purchased the company from
Peter Norton.

What exactly are you expecting to achieve by means of this proverbial
"optimization" of the hard drive? Most of these optimizers are much
more about hype than substance.

If you do not want to use the Windows XP defrag utility then try Raxco
PerfectDisk from

Good luck

Isn't this equally true with regard to Norton Anti-Virus as regards
Home Users?

Hi Gerry:

In my opinion, yes. And NAV cannot be upgraded...it has to be
uninstalled and replaced by the new version. And uninstalling NAV is
frequently not as simple as 'Add or Remove Programs.' Even when you do
manage a successful uninstall, it can leave behind artifacts that get in
the way. In my case, a remnant of NAV caused a check marked blank entry
to appear in the list of Internet Explorer's explorer bars. (I was able
to find help on that in these newsgroups.)

The distinction I was intending to make is that, of all the components
of SystemWorks, only antivirus and disk imaging software are important
for Windows XP.

Happy and healthy holidays to you!
