Running xp pro on a Matsonic MS8308E board with an AMD XP2000
processor.

I have a basic MS optical keyboard/mouse set which can be used either
with USB or PS/2

The problem: If I connect via USB, everything works fine but the PC
won't wake up from standby. There seems to be no 'wake on usb' or
similar command in BIOS.

However - if I connect via PS/2 only the keyboard will work. The mouse
is dead as a ...dead mouse. Naturally, I've tried changing channels
etc.

Any advice? Especially on why the pc won't wake on usb...

TIA - Pete

I believe that the USB port must be used in order for the mouse to function.

So it can be USB cable plugged into PC allow Keyboard + Mouse to work. And
PS/2 cab;e plugged in only allows keyboard to work.

The PS/2 Keyboard port is only for Keyboard and will not serve for Keyboard
+ Mouse input.
