A second drive (Western Digital) has been installed in XP HE Dell machine.
The OE drive is also WD. They (WD) recommend one master-slave relationship
can be cable select. The end device is the master with the middle connection
is the slave. Following their instruction both drives have been jumpered to
cable select. Dell "chat" recommended the WD model and Dell (sales) assured
me the new drive would be compatible. Any suggestions?

That arrangement works fine on my machine. Is the one which is the master
also have the operating system?

You may find the slave drive has poor performance if you have not enabled
the slave drive in the BIOS settings. XP will default to PIO mode if that is
the case.
