You probably have the boot order set incorrectly in the BIOS. Make sure
you have the hard drive in there. In fact, you can make it the first
device looked at if you like.

This would have nothing to do with it. All of my boxen for the past
few
years have been 1) floppy 2) cdrom 3) HDD0 or whatever my system disk.
This sounds like a bad registry entry. At this stage I would go ahead
and
write zeros to the drive and reinstall with a slipstreamed XP-SP2
disk.

I'm sorry but I disagree with you. This is a problem that has surfaced
quite a lot with home users who install - or reinstall - XP. They
follow instructions to go into the BIOS and set the cd to boot first,
but often do it so the hard drive doesn't appear in the boot list. Of
course you can boot with removable devices and/or cd drives first
before the hard drive (although it is a simple security measure to have
the hard drive come first so someone can't just boot your system with a
floppy or cd - we always do this on school computers, for instance).

If you do a Google for this problem, you'll see that it occurs many
times and most times it is because the hard drive has inadvertently
been left out of the boot order.
