Operating in Safe Mode

In the "Start Windows in Safe Mode" window of Help and Support Center, bullet
#4 describes a window reading "Please select the operating system to start",
after choosing to restart my computer. This window does not appear when I do
so, and I fear this is the only way i can get Windows to run in Safe Mode.
Any tips?
 
Allan, on next startup of WinXP just tap F8 a few times until you get a
Menu. From there you can select Safe Mode.
