Opens WMV as text files

Sorry for the cross post but I am not sure if this is a Windows XP SP2 or a
WMP 9 problem.

When I click on a wmv file link on a website, I get an Internet explore page
full of jumbled text. Also if I click on it and choose Save target as, it
defaults to File type txt. But if I change it to all files, and give it a
wmv ending, it saves the file, and it can be viewed properly in Windows
Media Player.

Any help appreciated.

What WEBsite? What browser?

If the MIMEtype being sent by the WEBsite's server is incorrect, the file
may be rendered as text. Simply save the text dump as a WMV file (wait
for completion), then double-click the file. Or hold down <shift> while
clicking the link to the file. A SAVE AS box may appear.

Internet Explorer ver 6.0.2900.2096
http://www.funnyjokes.com/humor/wmv/.
for example

The same thing happens with swf files too......the only thing that streams
or downloads properly are mpeg/mpg/avi/midi/wav......and yes I mentioned I
had to Save as above.

I did mention that I tried the samples at the MS website and they work
properly. So they will have to let everyone else in on the secret I guess.

I have the same problem since I installed XP SP2. Tried to reisntall
MediaPlayer but that does not help.

Anyone has suggestions?

Other than a complete reinstall, I think we will have to wait for the
release version, or until Microsoft tells the rest of the whole internet
world the secret of streaming wmv, wma, etc files properly. ;)
