as PDF ?

Well Microsoft Office can't, so what do you think?

Don't think Adobe would be too pleased about anyone using their format,
unless they're getting a share of the action. And a share of nothing don't
sound too tempting

I cannot speak to OpenOffice 1.0.3, but OpenOffice 1.1 definitely
*CAN* save in .pdf format (well, technically, it "exports" to .pdf
format). It's right there on the file menu. Not sure which version
of OO introduced this feature, but 1.1 definitely has it, and it works
well, IMO.

Never heard of looking for info before you post? Try here for the PDF spec
http://partners.adobe.com/asn/acrobat/docs/filefmtspecs/PDFReference15draft.pdf

and Open Office 1.1 will save to PDF (currently in beta
http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/source/1.1beta2/index.html)

There are millions of programs that can do things that MS Office can't.

PDF has opened the PDF format, which was a good idea: PDF /destroyed/ the
competition of all the similar (but closed) file formats (e.g. Envoy from
WordPerfect, which now uses PDF export instead of its own).

I agree that it's a good idea to open formats if you want to keep a
standard, but they don't seem to have opened it all that much and are
keeping Acrobat two steps ahead of the pack. Makes sense if they
still want to sell Acrobat.

WP10 only exports to Acrobat 4.0 and has problems with simple things
like working hyperlinks. WP11 has allegedly solved that and a few
other things, but still doesn't have all the goodies the full Acrobat
has. Some of the formatting is a wee bit off, too. I would assume
this to be the case with Open Office, too, but will see.

For most of us, though, yeah, Easy Office, Open Office (I hope-- I
haven't used the latest one yet), WP, and the rest of them export well
enough for most of our needs. I usually use WP10, but do use the
other two occasionally, and if I have to distribute something
electronically, it's gonna be either as .rtf, or .pdf. PDF has made
my life very easy for some highly formatted stuff that goes to people
who don't have exactly the software I have. It's also usually
preferable to html or xml for distribution.

AFAIK they release the format of new features shortly after releasing a new
version. So yes, they are always at least one step ahead...
(Plus: they are the only ones who decide what goes in the next version.)

I don't use hyperlinks in "normal" text documents, so I never tried that.
But no formatting problems until now (which doesn't mean they don't exist).
Using OOo 1.1beta2.

Some of the stuff I do is sent as email attachments and/or put on the
web, so hyperlinks are important, but not crucial. The graphics
usually come out great, and everything prints properly, but there's
some weird text spacing at times when viewed onscreen. It could be
some bizarre setting somewhere.

I'm interested in seeing how OO handles it. Downloaded 01.1beta and
will play with it.
