Opening wps file...

J

juliuslr

I hate Microsoft. They market TWO products: WORKS and Office and
the big brother cannot open the little brother's file. When
I try to open a wps file with Word, I got tiny blank boxes.
Googling for freeware help didn't pan out. Found microsoft
wps2krtf.exe tool but it doesn't work in XP Office. I went
through the motion of installing but still can not open it.
Anyone can help? I just want to be able to read it. Thanks

Yep, I tried that tool too. It went thru the install process, installed
an icon on my desktop and whne I opened it, it gave the standard file
open menu, I selected my wps file, and then the rest looked like a Word
application tryoing to open a file, including the needed Word
'"something" for importing file is not installed.. please install
"Microsoft Office Disk with Front Page". Well, I FOUR disks for my CS
Office, and none of them have Front Page. So I cannot use the Viewer
either.Stupid Microsoft!!!!

Try the Office Converter Pack. Sometimes works for me.

Bummer. Sorry. We had works on our first PC and I threw it away. What
junk. I got Office 97 Pro but did not want to fork out the money for
future upgrades, so I went to Open Office. This proves it is all about
money for MS. That is why I use Linux as much as I can at home.

Julius,

Use Wordpad or Notepad for the word processing. There will be some extra
sigla and notation, but the majority of the text can be read.

Hope this helps.

Did you try "Works 6.0 Converter for Works and Word Users"?

Overview
The Works 6.0 Converter converts word processor documents created in
Microsoft Works 6.0 to Microsoft Word and other versions of Works.
Specifically, this converter works with Works 2000, 4.5, and 4.x, and
Word 2002, 2000, and 97 on machines running Microsoft Windows® 98,
2000 Professional, Millennium Edition, and XP.

Larry, I tried the suggested converter and it works. Thanks to all who
helped.
Care to share which converter Larry recommended or do we have to google?

Even though you are using MS Works, you can still save your documents as
..doc instead of .wps. Then you should have no problem openning later in
either Works or Word.

Thats not it. This was a file sent by a relative, and she's not
computer literate enough to know that other saving options exist, hence
my initial problem. My problem is now solved, HOWEVER, to re-iterate:
it is Microsoft's stupidity for having a flagship "Office" product that
cannot even open a file created by its other "similar product" without
having to resort to adding a converter engine.
