Opening Word document attachments

When trying to open standard Word documents in Windows Mail I am getting a
message ' this file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Create an assocition in Set Associations Control Panel'.

Is this a Windows Vista program bug because I could always open such
documents in Outlook Express on Windows XP. If not, how do I fix it?

p.s. the association in the control panel for .doc to Word looks fine.
 
Is Microsoft Word or Microsoft Word Viewer installed on Vista?

If you save .doc attachment to desktop it opens from there?
