Does anybody know about problems with opening word 2000
documents in word
xp??Everytime i open a document originally created in
word 2000 using word
xp, word hangs and says not responding and then recovers
and says read only.
But soon as i copy the data inside a word 2000 document
and paste it into
new one and give it different name it opens fine and
doesnt crash ever. As i
have thousand of documents its a bit tedious to do the
above procedure. Do i
have to convert the documents or something??Any advice
would be great

*Rename* rather than delete, so that when you find it doesn't work, you
don't lose all your customizations.

Word 2002 is backward compatible with Word 2000.

It is not obvious why this is occurring. There appears to be some corruption
in the documents, although it could be the malign influence of some third
party add-in. Norton AV's office plug-in is always a good candidate as is
the Microsoft Works add-in.

It is worth noting that these crashes will have left their mark on the
system, with loads of orphaned temp files - see

One final point - do you have Word 2000 and 2002 operating under the same
operating system? There may be some minor conflict between them. Are they
sharing normal.dot and/or document templates?
