If I have a webpage open, I then want to open another
webpage from a link on my desktop, the first webpage
disappears and is "taken over" by the second webpage I've
called up. Is there a way to prevent this? Thanks for
your help.

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
Uncheck "Reuse windows for launching shortcuts".

If that doesn't fix it see
