Opening new document from a Template causes a Runtime error

I save my most often used templates on my desktop. If word is already opened,
when I click on one of my templates it creates the new document and takes the
user through a series of fillin fields. No problem, works great.

If word is not already open, a dialog box with a runtime Error 91 appears
the message reads object variable or with block variable not set. If we hit
cancel several time we are back to the various fillin dialog boxes and it
works from there.

What is going on?
