Opening multiple workbooks

I am using Excel 2003. From starting Excel I try to open, say two workbooks and though the workbooks load, only one button is displayed on the taskbar. Ctrl+F6 does not work but Ctrl+Tab toggles through the workbooks. Opening further workbooks allows the buttons of the new workbooks to be displayed on the taskbar. I only have Excel open and I have 1 Gb of RAM. Opening documents in Word operates as it should

Can anyone help?

Blue,

Guessing, but try Tools | Options | View..check Windows in Taskbar

Which button are you referring to:

The Tab Selector for switching between workbooks located
along the Taskbar?

Anon,

That was my interpretation. Have to wait for Blue to respond.

I just started using Excel 2003 too and I noticed the same
thing. It is apparently a new "feature". It appears that
similar tasks are grouped together in a Menu that pops up
when you click on the task that's showing. Apparently an
effort to conserve space on the task bar. Yes, it annoys
me too.

Thanks for the posts

Kevin and Ano
Yes it is the taskbar buttons, tabs, whatever which are causing the problem. I looked at the options dialogue and the Windows in Taskbar check box was already checked. I tried unchecking it and checking it again and the buttons appeared on the taskbar but when I closed and reopened Excel it performed as it had before, ie only one button showing. Could this be a bug or is my system at fault. I have tried Detect and Repair with no effect and the Repair Tool in Windows XP Setup with the same result

I'm not sure your experience is the same as mine. My taskbar is not full and resting the cursor on the button does not display the other workbook buttons in the group but thanks for your post.

That seems odd. Does this only happen for XL?

The only time my "buttons" on the taskbar "bunchup" is when the taskbar is
full. But even then if I select the XL "button", I can see the various
opened files. If my taskbar is NOT full, then I have separate instances of
XL.

But it appears your behavior is different. And you've tried the checking
and unchecking. I am not sure what to suggest. Sorry.

Best regards,
Kevin

I chanced on this when looking for a solution to my problem

If you right click on the taskbar and select Properties, you can deselect the option to group buttons. I think that should remove the annoyance!
