Opening MS Word and XLS documents from OE 6

I just got an eMachines PC that came with XP home addition. When I receive email with a Word or Excel document attached, it takes a very long time for the document to open (using Office 2000 applications) by double clicking on the document name. (It was always nearly instantaneous in Win 98.) eMachines tells me that since the PC comes pre-loaded with MS Works, this is the problem. However, I checked and see that DOC and XLS files are associated properly with Office 2000 applications. Is there a way to optimize OE6/XP performance? Should I unintall MS Works? Thanks.

The documents are scanned for viruses before they open.
Do they open faster if you save to the hard drive first?

Ron -- Yes, the documets open quickly if opened from the hard drive. Thing is, they always opened up as fast when I double clicked the doucment name as an attachment when using OE in Win 98.

You W98 machine was not scanning attachments. It is always
a good idea to NEVER directly open any attachment. If you
must open an attachment that you trust and expect, save it
to the hard drive, this will usually allow the file to be
scanned, then open it from the hard drive.

I had the same problem.
after getting nowhere with emachines customer support,
I returned the unit and bought a HP. guess what, problem solved.
