Opening MHT files

T

Tim

On the Internet, I can find plenty of other people with the same problem.
There is no solution that I can find. This appears to be a problem only with
certain websites and how they are designed and how IE saves web pages as MHT.

I have IE 8 on my computer. XP Pro, SP3, current with updates.

If I go to: http://www.chieftain.com/ and save an article as a MHT file,
and the file name has 20 or more characters, I cannot open that MHT file in
IE 8.

If I reduce the file NAME to 19 characters or less I can open those files.
I have some files saved from last year and they have "long" names and I can
still open them fine.

If I go to 9news.com and save a page as MHT, I can open the page again just
fine in IE 8 no matter how long the file name is. I went to MSN.com and
saved a page (and the file name was much longer than 20 characters) and it
opened up fine too.

Can anybody explain to me what is going on with this?

Where are you saving it?
Tried saving it to something like C:\Saved\?

This is a handy source for checking out "strange" file suffixes.
Good luck.

Sandy,

How does that apply to the query?

The OP obviously knows what a *.MHT file is and how to create one and even
how to read one. ;-)

Tim,

Why not post your question in an IE Newsgroup?

Are you absolutely certain that the problem is with filenames over 19 characters?

Or....

Could it just possible be because of a "space" in the filename (either in the MHT
filename or anywhere along the path to the MHT file).

This is quite a common problem when the "Open with" registry entry has been edited at
some point and the double-quotes have been omitted that surround the replaceable
parameter within the registry value that contains the command.

To check this and rectify it (if it is the culprit) do the following :

Open the "Folder Options" control panel.

Click on the "File Types" tab.

Scroll down to the MHT file type and click on the "Advanced" button to edit.

Select on the "Open" menu item and click on the "Edit" button to edit it.

it should look like this :

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "%1"

If it does not, add the "quotes" around the "%1" and close up by clicking on the [ok]
button to exit.

If this was the problem - it should be sorted now...
