Up until today, when I double-clicked on a folder, it would open up in a new
window and show all of the contents of the folder. I haven't changed any of
the settings, and today it started behaving differently. When I double-click
on any folder a "search results" window opens, and no files are listed at
all. The only way that I have figured out to open a folder is to "right
click" and then choose "open" from the contextual menu. This is very
annoying and time consuming. How can I get my folders to open up when a
double click like they used to? This behavior started right after I used a
new mini cruzer flash drive for the first time. I've used other flash drives
in the past with no problem. Anybody know what's up?? Thanks, Deborah

This problem occurs when you alter the "Drive" / "File Folders" entries via
File Types dialog, to add a "Command Prompt here" or "Print Directory"
feature for drives / folders. (example)

Resolution:

Click Start/Run and type this command to fix this problem:
(Tip from David Candy)

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll

-or-

Fix "Search" Opens Instead of Explorer:

-or-

To fix this manually via registry:

If this problem is seen for Drives:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
Set (default) to "none" (without ")

If this problem is seen for folders:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
Set (default) to "none" (without ")
