When opening a folder I am automatically routed to
the "search" window (Start-Search). The name of the
folder I'm opening does show in the "Look In" box and I
have to press search to retrieve what's in that file.I
just want to double click and open the folder to view the
contents.

Mark, if you look at the "Search" button in the toolbar of your window, is
the button activated? Can you click it OFF?
If you can, then:

click Tools
Folder Options
View tab
click "Apply to all folders"
Apply
OK
OK

Another method to solve it. (Courtesy: David Candy:MVP)
Click Start | Run | type "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll"
