opening files attachment tif on web mail

I have laptop with Windows 2000 Professional and explorer
6.0 with latest patches installed. I used to be able to
open tif, tiff attachments on the webmail. But lately
whenever I click on the attachment it gives me little
square box on the top left corner. When save the
attachment and open it opens fine. Why am I not able to
open directly.
