Opening Excel files

When I try to open a MS Excel file, it breaks down the
path and file name into multiple words and gives me a
dialog box that it cannot open a file by that (individual
word) name. After I click through several "OKs" in the
dialog boxes for each word, the file finally opens.

I run Office 2000 on Windows 2000 Professional.

I used to be able to open an Excel file on one mouse click
and I am unsure of what settings changed to create such an
annoyance.

Sometimes one of these works:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
