opening excel files

When attempting to open an excel file saved to my pc I
get a message stating 'file not valid'

The file may be corrupted. You can attempt to open the file with
StarOffice, which apparently has better luck with corrupted Excel files than
Excel itself does :-(.

And to the OP: Any chance you opened the file in MSWord and saved it as a word
document (even with a .xls extension)?

If yes, then you might be able to save a little bit by reopening in MSWord and
copy|pasting back into a new workbook in excel.
