Opening Excel 2003 file in 2007 produces gibberish

I recently installed Office 2007 on my in-law's computer. When they try to
open an Excel 2003 file from email the data is presented as random
characters. Any suggestions? Thanks.
 
Ask the sender of the file to send the email in Plain Text Format.
