I have the new windows vista already installed on my new laptop. I cannot
open email documents which are sent to me from windows xp users and visa
versa. If I create a document in works on vista and then send it to a windows
xp user they cannot open. What am I doing wrong or what do I need to change?

Hi, Ashleigh - This is not an issue connected with you running Vista and
your friends running XP. The problem is happening because you and your
friends don't have the same programs installed.

When you create data with a program, that program creates/saves the data
in its own format. An example is that the typical Word format is
myfile.doc and the typical Works Word Processor format is myfile.wps. To
read data in a particular format, you need to have a program installed
on your computer that understands that format, either the actual program
in which the file was created (like Word or Works) or another program
that can understand the format.

So your friend would need to either have Works installed on her computer
to read the document you sent or MS Word which can read *some* Works
files. Another way to handle this is to save your document in .rtf format.

Thank you - that is helpful.
In order for me to be able to open word documents which get sent to me,
shall I install Microsoft word on my computer or just save it once I receive
the file in rtf.format?

For example I received an email in word doc format, I tried to open it but it
comes up with "choose a program to open the file" the internet option goes
straight to word homepage. I have tried saving it in another format including
works, adobe and word pad but still will not read it.

It's not a Vista/Win XP issue.

Specifically what is the error message you're getting?

thank you very much - will do that then!

That's a great suggestion about the MS Word Viewer. I always forget
about that one! And here are a few other suggestions:

1. If you already own Word, then sure - install it and use it. Please be
aware that while newer versions of a program (like Word) can usually
open files created in an older version of the same program the reverse
doesn't hold true.

2. If you don't own Word and don't want to buy it, you can download and
install OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org. OpenOffice is a free office
suite that can read Word documents and can also save in earlier Word
formats.

3. If you buy Word 2007, then make sure you save in the compatible
earlier Word format. Word 2007's native format is not *.doc.

Have a great day, Ashleigh!

Have your people send in a standard text, NOT in a proprietary word
processing language.

i have the same problem, i have viewer and i can't open excel documents or if

*What* viewer do you have? Viewers are specific for applications. The
Word viewer mentioned below can't open Excel files, just as an Excel
viewer can't open Word files.

Unless they have Works installed, they can't open it. Many, perhaps
most, people don't use Works (I don't, for example) and will be unable
to open Works attachments you sent them.

If you are sending a text document save it and send it as an .rtf
file, instead of as a Works file. Almost everyone can open that.
