Opening Document shows all files but will not open

Trying to open Word 2003 Folder only to view all the files within folder but
unable to proceed. What do I need to do to avoid viewing files & simply
access document?
 
I don't understand the question. Are you selecting a document and clicking
Open or double-clicking on a filename?
