Opening Desktop when multitasking

How does one open the Desk Top when IE, and Word (for example) is open,
without using the Start button--I don't have IE on Start.
Have XP Pro SR2 ++ and OE SR2, et al... and Zone Alarm, plus router in DSL,
and AVG, Adaware, etc.

1. Press :
Windows Key + D [Hide everything including Dialog boxes]
OR Windows Key + M [Hide Open Windows]

2. Turn on Quick Launch toolbar by:
Right clicking on taskbar > Toolbars > Quick Launch
Then click on the "Show Desktop" icon in quick launch toolbar.

3. Right click Taskbar > Click "Show Desktop"
