IE won't open from desktop Icon

Hi,
Internet Explorer is not responding when I click on desktop Icon. Hourglass
just sits there and can’t do anything. Have to use ctrl, alt, del to close.
However, can start IE by right click Start button and then click on IE.
Yahoo then opens, but keep getting message "Server busy." Clicking on Retry
several times and msg finally goes away. I’ve run Norton and AVG and found
no viruses. I’ve run SpyDot and Adaware and removed any spyware found. I’ve
checked the block “repair IEâ€, and reinstalled Win 98 SE 2 x’s. Still can’t
get IE to open. Firefox and Netscape open ok.

Hi RayG :)

Your desktop Icon may have become corrupted. Try the following and see if
it helps. If the new Icon opens IE, then delete the original one on your
desktop. If not, then you may have other issues.

How do I recreate IE Icon on Desktop
http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBB/tip0900/rh0988.htm

or...

Just go to Program Files>Internet Explorer>scroll down to find the
EXPLORE.EXE and right click on it, select Create Shortcut, and then copy it
to your desktop.

The method of showing the desktop icon varies according to operating
system.

In Win9x, this is the way to get the IE icon on the desktop:

IE-Tools-Internet Options-Advanced
Check "Show Internet Explorer on the desktop"

Uncheck it to remove it and check it again.

You may find http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBB/tip0900/rh0988.htm a bit
confusing for Win98 as it is not relevant for Win9x and IE6.
There is no Regedit32 (though you can use Regedit instead) but the key
they mention of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace\{FBF23B42-E3F0-101B-8488-00AA003E56F8}
does not appear to be needed in Win98 as I have no such key, though I
did with Win9x and IE4. I suspect it may be valid for NT and perhaps
XP but I don't have either. That Namespace key is not deleted or
created in Win98/IE6 when the desktop icon changes though it used to
happen many years ago in Win9x and earlier versions of IE.

Thanks for your replies. The problem was occurring BEFORE I deleted the Icon. After putting the new Icon on the desktop, IE still will not open. Strange that it does open when I click on Start button and click on Icon. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Since original posting I did manage to remove 70 spyware problems with Ad-Aware SE Plus. Where they came from I don't know, but had a devil of a time getting rid of them. Ran it again ,and no problems detected. Also ran Norton anit-virus, and no viruses were found. I used Window Washer to clean up all the garbage files.

If you put the icon on the desktop in the manner I suggested, then I
am at a loss as to why it does not work.
Please try removing it and reinstalling it again using
IE-Tools-Internet Options-Advanced

Does it bring up Internet Properties if you right-click it and select
Properties?
Does it have a shortcut arrow? (It shouldn't)
What option is bold if you right-click it?

The desktop icon is not supposed to be the same as a shortcut and
clicking on the Start button and selecting a shortcut to IE is not
quite the same thing as using the desktop icon.

You can obviously create a shortcut to IE and put it on the desktop as
already suggested and use it instead of the desktop icon you have or
put a shortcut in the Quick Launch Bar where it may be of more use. I
don't ever use the real desktop icon myself and have not for years.
