Getting desperate now!

Start Windows Explorer and click Tools>Folder Options>File Types and make
sure the settings are correct for the file type you wish to open.

Brian, thanks for the suggestion but have already tried in vain; GIFs and
JPEGs are currently associated with MS Office picture manager but have tried
windows picture & fax viewer, quicktime picture viewer and many others. All
work fine from windows explorer or from the programme itself but not from
within outlook 2003.

What is the exact text of any error messages that you get.

I'm hoping that you can help me as you did Boris in opening attachments.
I just tried to open an attachment which was preceded by the Explorer logo
and included a pdf extension. I was "told" to save it. I saved it to
Documents and again tried to open it with no luck. What should I do now?

Do you have an application installed that can open the PDF file? If not,
visit http://www.adobe.com/ and download Acrobat Reader.

My apologies....I didn't have Acrobat Reader installed as I had thought. It
is now installed and I can open the attachment. Thank you for alerting me to
what I needed to do.

May I be forgiving for hijacking this thread? I have a similar problem with
opening jpegs. I have changed from XP to Vista basic and reinstalled my
Outlook 2003. I am able to open some email attachments, such as *.pdf, but I
cannot open any *.jpg attachments. I don't know why this is so. I have
Adobe Reader 8 installed. Could a hen - blind or otherwise - help me plse.

Can you open these .JPG attachments if you save them to disk first?

Haven't tried - why can't I open them just by double-clicking, as with
Windows XP?
Miss G.

Because opening an attachment from within Outlook writes it into a special
temp folder which can become full /corrupt, a fairly common issue corrected
by emptying the folder. Saving the file to disk eliminates the use of this
folder and eliminates it as a culprit. If the file cannot be opened when
saved to disk first, it might be to a totally different issue involving the
..JPG file association. So, try saving the file to disk, see if it opens
from there, and please report back.

I saved them to a folder on the desktop but it took this much mess: file-save
attachments-ok-desktop-create new folder-desktop-[create name for a new
folder]-desktop-ok. The folder is then on the desktop and I can dble-click
on it and the photos appear in there.

Plse tell me there is an easier way!
Miss G.

OK, if you can open an attachment after saving it to disk, the problem is
very likely due to Outlook's Secure Temporary Folder being either full or
corrupt. Try emptying this folder and see if the problem persists:
