I am suddenly unable to open attachments to my email in Windows mail without
saving them - I only want to open and view them without saving them. This
problem started inexplicably as I could previously open attachments without a
problem. Any suggestions on how to fix this or what caused it?

1.) Do you have IE8 installed?

2.) Which error messages do you receive?
(pls give the exact wording)

Was this question ever answered? My attached files are word and excel.
Message was: "file could not be found. Check spelling of file name, and
verify that the file location is correct."

Have you installed IE8? Is your computer fully patched at Windows Update
and is "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Vista
(KB972260)" listed in Installed Updates?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed, is your
subscription current, and is it supported in IE8? What anti-spyware
applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)?
Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed
IE8?

Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine
(e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought it)?

Just asking for now!! Do NOT use such a Restore Point yet!! => Do you have
an available Restore Point which predates the install of IE8?

If you do either of the following, does the behavior persist?...

=> Start | All Programs | right-click on Windows Mail | select Properties
| Start in <=delete the value here (leaving it empty/blank) | OK your way
out & reboot.

=> Right-click on the shortcut you use to start Windows Mail | select
Properties | Start in <=replace the parameter here with
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Temp & OK your way out.

NB: Uninstalling IE8 (cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700) should
resolve the behavior but you should not have encountered it in the first
place if IE8 was installed properly (cf.
http://groups.google.com/group/micr...er.general/browse_frm/thread/a17d79493eac253d)
and/or if IE8 was fully patched.

Which question???

As you might have seen from numerous threads, there is a "known problem"
with opening attachments in WinMail after having installed IE8 (I call
it the IE8-WinMail bug).

So far there has not been any fix for the problem except uninstalling
IE8
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700/en-us

It seems that installing the Windows Update "Cumulative Security Update
for IE8 for Windows Vista f(KB972260)" possibly might be a fix. But it's
too early for announcing this a relief.
