Opening Adobe files online

Hi:

I have Windows XP Professional and IE ver 6.0. When on-
line I cannot open a file that may be in Adobe Acrobat
format (pdf). I am forced to save the file then open it
up offline. Why can't I open the file while still online
and why do I have to save first then open it?

Hope somebody can help me. Getting frustrated. Many
