Opening a Presentation

When I open a presentation, it automatically opens as a slide show. I cannot
edit the presentation. It just runs through the slide show and then closes.
Is there a reason for this?

It depends on the file extension and how you are opening it. If the file
extension is .PPS and you open it by double clicking the file icon, or right
click and select Show, it will open in slide show mode. If you open PowerPoint
and then go to File > Open, regardless of file extension, the file will open in
Normal (edit) mode.

The "S" in .PPS tells PowerPoint to open the file directly into slide show mode.
If you don't want that, rename the file and give it an extension of .PPT and it
will open in Normal mode. The "S" stands for "Show".

Do have a regular version of PowerPoint installed or just the PowerPoint
Viewer. The behavior you described is what the Viewer does. It is also
the behavior of PowerPoint Show (.pps).

If you don't have PowerPoint, and you want to edit presentations, you
will have to buy a copy of PowerPoint.

If you do have PowerPoint and are trying to open a .pps file, you can
either change the extenstion of the file to .ppt and open it, or you can
open PowerPoint and then open the file by choosing Open from the File
menu.

If you have PowerPoint, and the file is not a .pps file, then you
probably have an error in the program assigned to open .ppt files. In
that case, you can open the file by starting PowerPoint and choosing Open
from the File menu, but you will also want to fix your file associations.
