Opening a contact clears the clipboard

I'm experiencing some odd behavior with Outlook contacts (Outlook 2002
(10.6515.6735) SP3 running on Windows XP Professional SP2).

Every time I open a contact record, the clipboard is cleared. This occurs if
I am creating a new contact, or if I open an existing contact.

Nothing similar happens when I open other Outlook forms.

Can anybody suggest any place to look for the cause of this behavior?

it's a known issue.

Diane,

Thanks for taking the time to respond, but is there any chance that you
might be able to give us some idea whether it's an issue that somebody is
trying to fix? Or when we might see a fix?

I'm not expecting a fix. If you show the office or windows clipboard you can
see what happens.

Diane,

I realize that you're trying to help a lot of people, and therefore don't
want to take too much time to answer any one question, but I wonder if you
could be a little less brusque.

I ran the Clipbook Viewer, and the only thing I can see is that, when I open
a contact form, the contents of the clipboard disappear. As I wrote in my
original post, when I open ANY OTHER OUTLOOK FORM, this doesn't happen.

I can't see anything that would indicate WHY this is happening. It certainly
doesn't strike me as "useful" behavior.

You say that it's "a known issue." That seems to imply that it's considered
undesirable behavior.

Generally, when a software product shows an acknowledged undesirable
behavior, we users can expect that the developers will try to correct that
behavior in some future release --- at least, that's what my users could
always expect when I was the developer ;<)

In this case, this "known issue" appeared recently, although I have been
using the application (Outlook XP) for quite a bit longer. It seems as
though it might be the result of a recent "release" in the form of an Office
Update (yes, I do try to keep up with them). If that's the case, it might
make sense that a future Office Update might restore the previous behavior.

I also understand that you're not a Microsoft employee, but you do seem to
have a lot of knowledge about Microsoft products, and it has been my
experience that MVPs often work closely with Microsoft developers or
documenters. Therefore, I was asking if you have any information that might
help me understand if this behavior, which is most certainly undesirable,
will be addressed by the developers. In particular, the fact that you can
state that this is "a known issue" would seem to indicate that you have
communicated with some group (the developers, perhaps?) who "know" about
it --- and if you're still in communication with that group, maybe you could
ask them if they're going to do anything about it.

I just think that, when there's a "known issue" (which probably means that
I'm NOT the only one who has reported it, and therefore I'm NOT the only one
who would like to see it fixed), it would be helpful to know if there's
anybody responding to our reports. Don't you agree?

When I have the clipboard viewable, I see a lot of action and icons are
left in the office clipboard cache. The icons include the mappoint icon plus
a few others, so it looks like addins are doing it. (When I test it on a
virtual pc with no addins installed, the clipboard isn't erased.) In this
case, there isn't too much the outlook team can do - an addin copies things
to the clipboard when a contact is opened and that erases the text you had
copied. That's how the clipboard is supposed to work. The addin should save
the last item copied and put it back on the clipboard, but that can be
problematic too.
