Opening a 2007 Excel File

An Office 2003 Word file was sent to me with a 2007 Excel file embedded in
the document. I have the compatibility pack on my system and can open 2007
documents without difficulty.

Would anyone know a way to open this embedded file. If I right click on the
file the menu shows it to be a 2007 Excel Workbook Object with an option to
Convert. However, when I click on the convert option a window opens with the
option to convert to and Excel Worksheet; I say okay but nothing seems to
change. I still cannot open the Excel file.

Thanks for any suggestions anyone has.

In Word (which has the compatibility pack), save the file in .docx format.
Then close the file.

In Windows Explorer, add a .zip extension so that Windows sees this as a zip
file instead of as a .docx file.

Open the .zip archive, and nagivate to:

word
embeddings

The .xlsx file is stored there. Drag/copy it to a regular folder. You should
now be able to open it with Excel 2003 (assuming you have the compatibility
pack).

(If you want... you can return the changed xlsx file to the embeddings
folder, the trim the .zip extension. But, I'm not sure why you'd want to do
that. But, there are a variety of options open to you.)

Thank you Herb for this feedback.

I am not able to open the embedded Excel file at all. If I double click on
the file I get a message that says:

"The object was created in Excel. This application is not available to open
this object. Make sure that the application is properly installed and that
it has no been deleted, moved or renamed."

If I right click, I see that it is a Microsoft Excel 2007 Workbook Object
with a flyout option to Convert but that is all. There is no option for me
to open the file.

I did check and I do have the compatibility pack for Excel.

If you're using Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, try disabling the Office
Plugin that comes with it (but don't disable Norton AutoProtect). See
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office programs
with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information.
