I am running Windows XP and used to get a button for each open task along the
bottom toolbar - from left to right. For some reason I no longer get this -
I now only get a single button and up and down scroll arrows. Can anyone
tell me how to get back to the multiple button scenario?

Try right clicking on the taskbar, then uncheck (by clicking) the "lock
the taskbar" button - drag the Tasks toolbar, and then lock the taskbar
again.

Hope it works for you.

[Start] > Settings > Taskbar and Start menu
/Taskbar\ [_] Group similar taskbar buttons
