Open Source Tape Backup???

Anthony Ewell

Hi All,

I just got this from one of my customers:

Backup is useless. I rebooted. Put in new
tape. Remote start. Self erased. Started
copying. Then computer crashed twice
without interferance. Even backup tape would
not come out of VXA.

Tried a second time, and same thing, after
about 4 minutes of copying. This is not working
for me at all.

I have tried several commercial backup programs with
no satisfaction. :'( They all have some (different)
stupid bug(s) that messes things up. Editorial comment:
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! :'(

What I really need is a backup software that has
"peer review." Anyone know of a good Open Source
tape backup software for Windows?

Many thanks,

Your "customer" should bring in a competent consultant to resolve the
problem as contrasted to trying program after program.

I doubt very much you will get an answer without telling us what programs
you have tried and what problems you had. Is it for a server or a
workstation? I'm assuming workstation as you posted in an XP newsgroup. I
have used many tape backup programs. One of the best for workstations is
from NovaStor. It is commercial so it may be one of the ones you have tried.
Most open source is for linux. I don't know of any open source tape backup
programs for Windows. Try the following google search:

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=windows+"open+source"+"tape+backup"&btnG=Google+Search&meta=

Hi Kerry,

It is for a workstation. Actually two. The tape drive
is on the newer of the two. I left out the names of the
commercial packages as I had just blown a fuse over all the
stupid bugs, three hour calls to tech support, etc. etc. etc.,
and had decided that I needed something of higher quality
(open source). So, no need to list the names of
the guilty.

I searched tucows, sourceforge, freshmeat and nonags
before posting. I will check your link: I don't always
ask the search engines correctly.

I will look and see if NovaStor has a demo too

Many thanks,

www.novastor.com You can download the full version of the program and test
it for 30 days.
