open & save old xls file

I have a number of linked workbooks in xls 97 (win98) which have transferred
to XP Office 2003. Some workbooks open with error message (extended long file
name like 9111111111111!) and will accept data but will not save. What can I
do to save these workbooks please?
 
go back to xl97, and change the names so they are much shorter.
then save them.
